What Are People Building With The Hothouse?

What can you actually build with a Hothouse DIY effects pedal? Short answer: a lot more than a boost and a fuzz, though everyone loves those too. The Hothouse community has been busy writing custom DSP code, sharing tutorials and releasing ready-to-flash effects for the Hothouse / Daisy Seed platform. Below are some of the best Hothouse projects I’ve come across lately. Every one comes from a builder who knows their way around a solder joint and a code editor.

Let's kick things off with an absolutely brilliant video series from CalSonics called Building Digital Guitar Effects. He goes into technical depth on neural amp modeling (using NAM A2!), reverb & delay, distortion, impulse responses and more. And all with great-sounding code examples in the Arduino environment. Simply stellar.

Floyd Steinberg is a popular creator with a voice for the ages. He's also a wicked smart dude that has done some really cool stuff with his Hothouse. In several videos, he does a good job explaining his use of Pd (Pure Data / Plugdata) for some pretty complex effects. Note that Plugdata has built-in support for flashing to the Hothouse!

Boyd Timothy is a contributor to the HothouseExamples repo on Github. You can find his Flick effect code there, and the compiled binary can be directly flashed to your Hothouse using the Hothouse Flasher.

This one blew my mind when I saw it. Martin Aspeli with his totally rad Mulebox, which is a DIY reactive load box with impulse response loader. Martin used the open source gerber files from the Cleveland Music Co. open-source-pedals repo to get his own PCBs manufactured, and made the Hothouse board the "brain" of his creation. Super-impressive. And a viable alternative to that expensive OX you've had your eye on.

In no particular order, here are some random snippets of people programming and playing with their DIY Hothouse effects.

This list is a living thing. The Hothouse community keeps cooking up new effects, tutorials and frankly unreasonable feats of DSP wizardry, and I’ll keep adding the good stuff as I stumble across it. Bookmark this page and check back every so often to see what’s new. Built something cool with your Hothouse yourself? Drop me a line. I’d love to see it, and you might just end up on this list.
