“I’ll just try it for a gig” is how this starts. Next thing you know it’s bolted down, velcroed in, and listed in your will. Nobody in the room will notice it’s on. Everybody will notice it’s off.
Some overdrives want to be the star of the show. They blanket your tone with a lot of mid-hump, smear your chords into mush, and make every guitar sound the same. The Goldkind Opendrive is not that pedal.
Inspired by the beloved “organic” overdrives of the boutique world, the Goldkind is designed to sound like you, only more so. Kick it on and your tone gets bigger, warmer, and more alive. Chords stay clear and individual notes stay separate. Your pick attack still matters. Roll back your guitar’s volume and it cleans up like it’s been gagging for you to ask. Dig in and it bites back. And all with just the right amount of natural-sounding compression.
It’s a low-to-medium gain drive with plenty of output, so it works just as well as a light edge-of-breakup sweetener, a clean boost, or a push into an already-cooking amp or another pedal. Stack it before or after your other dirt and everything gets better. It doesn’t hog the spotlight; it just makes the whole band sound more expensive.
But consider yourself warned: the Goldkind has a habit of moving in. It shows up for a trial run, quietly makes everything sound better, and is still on your board a year later. Nobody will clock it while it’s on. Switch it off mid-set and the whole band will turn to look at you at once, like you just unplugged the sun.
Please use responsibly. Or don't. We're a pedal company, not your dad.
Audio Clips
The Goldkind Opendrive straight into a dialed-in tube amp and recorded with a standard dynamic/ribbon mic combination. Effects added in post. Each clip starts with the straight in guitar tone, followed by the sound of the pedal.
